VDUB FESTIVAL 2012 - REVIEW
In 2008, the guys from Cum Laude sat around a table and brainstormed ideas for their next event. They had no clear idea what it would be but they knew one thing. Ok maybe it was more than one thing… they loved music, they loved having fun, they loved bringing people together and most of all the loved their Vdubs! With all of that in mind the Vdub Fest (or Vdub Day in its early form) was born.
While the U.S and Europe have events like Wuste Fest and Worthersee to please the VW and VAG enthusiasts oversees, there has never been a dedicated event on the scale and nature of these for the huge and passionate Southern African scene to enjoy. Not until now that is….
With 5000+ visitors in attendance for the 4th annual edition of the show, more than 14 dedicated sponsors exhibits, multiple aftermarket vendors and stalls, the Vdub Fest is the biggest aftermarket VW gathering in Africa! Visitors came from all corners of the country. Crews from PE, Durban, Free State, Cape Town and Limpopo were in good attendance and are assured to be there in numbers again next year. With home ground advantage, the Gauteng crews were always going to impress though. Crews from SuperDubz, CheeseLiving, Showtime Fanatics and the Vura Six Club of Soweto were out in full support with an impressive collection of convoys and vehicles on display.
Being a 2 day event, the Vdub Fest covered almost every aspect one could ask for in an aftermarket event. The Fest opened on Day 1 with the Sound Off and Dyno Competitions run by XXX Car Audio and Drews Auto respectively. There were also various live displays and exhibits from sponsors and vendors to keep everyone busy. The heat was a scorcher on day 1 as well but the eye candy wasn’t going to let that get in the way, the day then closed for day visitors and overnight visitors were entertained to a rocking afterparty. Day 2 was entirely dedicated to the Show and Shine competition; after all, that’s what the Fest comes down to.
With Vic Pardal as MC, the crowd were constantly entertained and “schooled” on every aspect of the aftermarket scene as car after car was displayed on the main judging stage. The judging panel had their hands full judging more than 200 cars. The standard of competition was intense (to put it mildly) and the number of entrants mind boggling. A brief Highveld thunderstorm caused a short break in proceedings, but once the rain had cleared the show rolled on.
Everything from Euro look to Rat look to Standard and Stock was on offer this year. Of course Mk1’s were present in their numbers but the varieties of Aircooled’s were just as prominent. Custom paint, sticker bombs and decals were some of the popular styling themes that came through this year. Engine builds were similarly diverse and it’s clear that a number of mack’s had suffered many a long day and night under the hood getting the cars ready in time for the show. The level of detail that was seen was amazing and all in attendance were treated to an exhibition of this workmanship. A number of guys built cars specifically for this event and the amount of time and effort put into some of the cars were evident for all to see. The final scores were extremely close but once all was said and done the most outstanding vehicles announced were as follows………………
